TachoMagic Guide: DVLA Fleet Numbers

What is a DVLA Fleet Number?

A DVLA Fleet Number (often called a DVLA Fleet Code) is a 6-digit reference used to keep track of the vehicles in a fleet for administrative purposes, such as taxing and MOT-ing.

A minimum of 50 vehicles registered to one address is required to be eligible for a DVLA Fleet Number - if you have other addresses with over 50 registered vehicles, each address requires its own fleet number.

It's an opt-in scheme, but worth doing, as it makes administrating your fleet a lot easier.

What are the benefits of joining the DVLA Fleet scheme?

The Government's website lists the main benefits of joining the DVLA Fleet scheme, which we've paraphrased below:

  • Documents such as V5Cs, V11s, and V85/1s (tax reminders) are received in bulk.
  • Vehicle taxation can be carried out in bulk.
  • The DVLA maintains a helpdesk (email and telephone) for operators that scheme members can access.
  • The DVLA has an extra identifier for each vehicle on the scheme (the DVLA Fleet Number), allowing them to respond to queries faster.
  • A DVLA Fleet Number is required to access the government's VVR Enquiry Service. This service allows users to see how many vehicles their fleet has, each vehicle's model, and when each vehicle next needs taxing & MOT-ing.

How do I register for a DVLA Fleet Number?

To register for this service, you'll need to get in touch with the DVLA's Commercial Vehicles Team (CVT) fleetshd@dvla.gov.uk or phone 0300 083 0016 (Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm). They'll handle any enquiries, and initiate the process.

Next, you'll need to collate your existing vehicles' V5C documents and post them to the following address:

Commercial Vehicles Team (CVT)
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BG

Each batch of V5C documents you send must contain no more than 100 V5Cs - if you have more, you must send another package separately. Each batch must contain a cover letter, indicating your request and including your company name and address, a contact name, a contact phone number, and a contact email address.

Once this is done, the DBS will update your V5Cs to use the new DVLA Fleet Number, and send out new ones to you. In future, all new vehicles you register must include the fleet number, or they won't be eligible for any of the services and benefits the DVLA Fleet Number offers!
